Industry Comment from Duncan Chapman

“People are definitely a company’s greatest asset. It doesn’t make any difference whether the product is cars or cosmetics. A company is only as good as the people it keeps.”

Mary Kay Ash

When you read this quote, I am sure that you, like me, will think ‘well that makes perfect sense’ and yet it seems to be that there are a lot of companies out there that do not look after their biggest asset. At Omega we try hard to invest in our people and this can take many forms such as ensuring that there is good career progression, job satisfaction and effective teamwork.

Many employees have been at the company for several years and are knowledgeable about our sector and it is great that they can pass this on to newer employees. We also work hard at ensuring that we all have an understanding of what other departments do and the challenges they face so that we can work together more effectively. Training courses also help, they keep people motivated and ensure that they continue to learn, a great example of which is the DMM Personal Development Programme that 14 of our senior managers have been on over the last year. It has given individuals the time to reflect on the way they operate on a day to day basis and to learn and practise different business skills.

I have already seen some changes in the way people operate and manage projects! At the end of the day, I always say to our people it is about valuing the contribution that each of us makes and ensuring that Omega is a happy place to work. After all we all spend most of our waking hours here!! ‘
